Abstract

Zbog negativnog utjecaja na komunikaciju i time na gotovo sve svakodnevne
aktivnosti (bračne, obiteljske, društvene, profesionalne) koje uključuju međuljudske odnose,
oštećenje sluha jedan je od najučestalijih uzroka promjena kvalitete života u odrasloj dobi.
Posljedice komunikacijskih teškoća koje prate oštećenje sluha su socijalne i emocionalne, a
uz negativne stavove javnosti o oštećenju sluha često rezultiraju mentalnim poremećajima,
poput anksioznosti i depresije. Procjenjuje se da će broj osoba s oštećenjem sluha do 2050.
godine prijeći 900 milijuna, zbog čega je od iznimne važnosti dostupnost suvremenih
stručnih i znanstvenih informacija, koje bi stručnjacima pomogle u organizaciji
sveobuhvatnih rehabilitacijskih programa. Ciljevi ovog rada su: (1) dati pregled suvremenih
spoznaja o potencijalu oštećenja sluha da dovede do narušenog mentalnog zdravlja i
prisutnosti mentalnih teškoća, poput anksioznosti i depresije, te (2) dati pregled argumenata
koji oštećenje sluha stečeno u odrasloj dobi mogu označiti rizičnim čimbenikom za narušeno
mentalno zdravlje. Oštećenje sluha stečeno u odrasloj dobi samo se po sebi ne može smatrati
rizičnim čimbenikom. Složena interakcija teškoća i izazova s kojima se osoba susreće uslijed
oštećenja sluha ima potencijal narušiti njezino mentalno zdravlje. Taj se nalaz treba uzeti u
obzir tijekom organiziranja rehabilitacije slušanja i govora, kako bi se očuvalo pozitivno
mentalno stanje njezinih korisnika te veći konačan uspjeh rehabilitacijskih ishoda.

Abstract (english)

Due to the negative impact of hearing loss on communication and thus on almost
all daily activities (marital, family, social, professional) that involve interpersonal
communication, it is one of the leading causes of diminished quality of life in adulthood. The
consequences of communication difficulties that accompany hearing loss are social and
emotional, and along with negative public attitudes toward hearing loss, they often result in
mental disorders, such as anxiety and depression. It is estimated that the number of people
with hearing loss will exceed 900 million by the year 2050. Due to this precise reason, it is
crucial that professionals have access to up-to-date information to aid them in creating
appropriate rehabilitation programs. The objectives of this review paper are: (1) to provide an
overview of current knowledge about the potential of hearing loss to negatively affect
person’s mental health and cause symptoms of common mental disorders (anxiety and
depression), and (2) to provide an overview of arguments that can label hearing loss acquired
in adulthood as a risk factor for mental health. A literature review concluded that acquired
hearing loss cannot, by itself, be considered as a risk factor. Complex interaction of
challenges that person faces, due to their hearing impairment, has the potential to negatively
affect their mental health. This finding should be considered during the planning stages of
aural rehabilitation to preserve persons positive mental state.
