Abstract

Svjetska populacija u stalnom je porastu starenja, a isti je trend prisutan u Republici Hrvatskoj. Oštećenje sluha jedno je od često prisutnih stanja u starijoj populaciji koja narušavaju kvalitetu života. Umanjivanje negativnih posljedica koje ono donosi moguće je provesti kroz preventivne programe u vidu probira na oštećenja sluha u starijoj životnoj dobi. Domovi za starije i nemoćne predstavljaju mjesto okupljenosti osoba starije životne dobi u posebnom riziku za izostanak otkrivanja oštećenja sluha s obzirom na specifičnosti institucionaliziranog načina života. Cilj ovog rada je ispitati percipirane teškoće slušanja među korisnicima domova za starije i nemoćne kako bi se procijenio udio pojedinaca u riziku od netretiranog gubitka sluha te ih usporediti s osobama izjednačenima prema dobi i spolu koje nisu institucionalizirane. U istraživanju je sudjelovalo 45 osoba iz 3 doma za starije i nemoćne u Gradu Zagrebu, Ličko-senjskoj županiji i Bjelovarsko-bilogorskoj županiji te 33 osobe koje nisu korisnici doma iz 13 hrvatskih gradova i/ili mjesta. Percipirane teškoće slušanja ispitane su Upitnikom za samoprocjenu slušanja (USS, Bonetti i Vodanović, 2011). Na temelju neparametrijskog Mann-Whitney U testa utvrđeno je kako ne postoji statistički značajna razlika u ukupnom rezultatu na USS-u između sudionika iz domova i sudionika koji nisu korisnici usluga domova za starije i nemoćne. Rezultati istraživanja pokazuju kako 42% korisnika domova za starije i nemoćne postiže 15 ili više bodova na USS-u, što ih stavlja u rizik oštećenja sluha, dok isto vrijedi za 39.4% sudionika koji ne koriste usluge domova za starije i nemoćne. Uzevši u obzir udio sudionika suspektno pozitivnih na probiru na oštećenje sluha putem samoprocjene, preporučuje se uvođenje sustavnog probira na oštećenja sluha kod osoba starije životne dobi, pogotovo onih koje su institucionalizirane, odnosno koje koriste usluge domova za starije i nemoćne.

Abstract (english)

The world's population is constantly aging and the same trend is present in the Republic of Croatia. Hearing loss is one of the most frequent conditions in the Elderly that affects their quality of life. It is possible to reduce the negative consequences of hearing loss through preventive programs such as screening. The Elderly gathered in nursing homes are at particular risk of being under-recognized as persons with hearing loss, considering the specifics of the institutionalized way of life. This research aims to examine perceived hearing difficulties among nursing home residents in order to get insight into the proportion of individuals at risk of untreated hearing loss and to compare them with age- and gender-matched individuals who are not institutionalized. Participants were 45 people from 3 nursing homes in the City of Zagreb, Lika-Senj County, and Bjelovar-Bilogora County and 33 people who are not nursing home residents from 13 Croatian cities and/or towns. Perceived listening difficulties were examined with The Hearing Self-Assessment Questionnaire (HSAQ, Bonetti and Vodanović, 2011). The non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test showed there was no statistically significant difference in the total HSAQ score between the group of Elderly from nursing homes and the group of Elderly who are not residents of nursing homes. Among nursing home residents, 42% achieved the total HSAQ score of 15, which puts them in risk of having hearing loss; among participants who are not nursing home residents, 39.4% achieved the total HSAQ score of 15. Taking into account the proportion of respondents who tested subjectively positive on hearing loss screening, it is recommended to introduce systematic screening for hearing loss among the Elderly, especially in institutions like nursing homes.
