Abstract (english) | The aim of this study was to examine the association between Big Five personality traits and seeking professional psychological help in young adults aged 18 to 35. Furthermore, we wanted to examine the association between gender, age, parents' education, the importance of religion, and the perception of the availability of professional psychological help and seeking help, as well as openness to seeking help. The data was collected through an online questionnaire during April 2023. A convenient sample of 583 participants was included, of which 483 were female, 96 were male and 4 did not want to declare their gender. The online questionnaire consisted of questions related to sociodemographic data, the Croatian translation of Goldberg's questionnaire 50-Item Lexical Big-Five Factor Markers for Self-Report (IPIP 50S; Mlačić i Goldberg, 2007) and questions related to seeking professional psychological help. The results showed that age, the importance of religion, the perception of the availability of professional psychological help, conscientiousness and emotional stability were significantly associated with seeking professional psychological help. Participants who are older, who reported less importance of religion, who perceived professional psychological help as available, and who scored lower on conscientiousness and emotional stability were more likely to seek professional psychological help. Regarding openness to seeking professional psychological help, the results were somewhat different. It has been shown that gender, age, extraversion, agreeableness and intellect are significantly associated with openness to seeking professional psychological help. Participants who are female, who are older, who scored higher on extraversion, agreeableness and intellect were more open to seeking professional psychological help. |
