Abstract

Unatoč prepoznatoj važnosti kvalitetne i efikasne komunikacije kao jednog od najvažnijih čimbenika povezanih sa starenjem, jako mali broj logopeda bavi se upravo komunikacijom osoba starije životne dobi s prisutnim kroničnim i progresivnim teškoćama. Budući da intervencijske metode poticanja komunikacije, jezika i govora mogu značajno utjecati na kvalitetu života osoba starije životne dobi, uključujući i osobe s demencijom, uloga logopeda nikako nije zanemariva. Jedan od najučestalijih tipova demencije je Alzheimerova bolest koja se odnosi na sindrom progresivnog gubitka pamćenja i intelektualnih sposobnosti, stečena je, progresivna te rezultira deficitima u različitim domenama kognitivnog funkcioniranja – pamćenju, vizuo-spacijalnim vještinama, općim intelektualnim sposobnostima, ali i u komunikaciji i jeziku. Unatoč činjenici da su komunikacijske i jezične teškoće vodeći simptomi Alzheimerove bolesti, uloga logopeda u rehabilitaciji osoba s tom bolesti nije u potpunosti prepoznata. Iz tog razloga, cilj je ovog rada bio istražiti ulogu logopeda u praksi u radu s populacijom osoba s Alzheimerovom bolest iz perspektive skrbnika i obitelji osoba s tom bolesti. Prvi korak bio je prikazati temeljna obilježja bolesti, tijek i progresiju kroz tri stadija, a potom i obilježja progresije komunikacijskih, jezičnih i govornih sposobnosti.
Potom je naglasak stavljen na ulogu logopeda u procesima procjene, terapije i savjetovanja.
Kako bi se utvrdila informiranost obitelji o radu logopeda s Alzheimerovom bolesti, provedeno je istraživanje čiji su sudionici bili članovi obitelji i skrbnici oboljelih osoba (N=30) koji su ispunili upitnik dostupan putem Google Forms-a. Istraživanje je ukazalo na potrebu za većom informiranosti populacije o područjima rada logopeda u što se ubraja i Alzheimerova bolest te općenito rad s populacijom osoba starije životne dobi. Nadalje, osim potrebe za povećanjem svijesti, ističe se i problem nedovoljne edukacije logopeda za rad s osobama starije životne dobi, a posebno onima s kroničnim i progresivnim teškoćama kao što je Alzheimerova bolest.

Abstract (english)

Despite the recognized importance of quality and effective communication as one of the most important factors associated with aging, very few speech and language pathologists work with communication of the eldery with chronic and progressive diseases. Taking into consideration that interventional methods of encouraging communication, language and speech can significantly affect the quality of life of the elderly, the role of speech and language pathologist is by no means negligible. One of the most common types of dementia is Alzheimer's disease which refers to progressive memory and intellectual abilities loss, and is acqiured, progressive and results in deficits in various domains of cognitive functioning – memory, visual-spatial skills, general intellectual abilities, including deficits in communication and language. Despite the fact that communication and language deficits are the leading symptoms of Alzhimer's disease, the importance of speech and language pathologist is not fully recognised. Accordingly, the aim of this study waas to investigate the role of speech and language pathologist in working with the people with Alzheimer's disease.
The first step was to illustrate the basic features of the disease, the course and progression through three stages, and characteristics of communication and language-speech progression.
Emphasis was then placed on the role of speech and language pathologists in assessment, therapy, and counseling processes. In order to determine the family awareness of the role of speech and language pathologist working with Alzheimer's disease, a study was conducted whose participants were family members and caregivers of patients (N=30). They completed a questionnaire available on Google Forms. The research pointed the need for greater awareness of the population about the areas of work of speech and language pathologists, which includes Alzhimer's disease, and about work elderly population in general.
Furthermore, in addition to the need to raise awareness, the problem of insufficient education of speech and language pathologists in working with elderly, especially those with chronic and progressive difficulties such as Alzheimer's disease, is highlighted.
