Abstract

Equine assisted therapy is quality form of (re)habititation for children with disabilities which uses horse to motivate a child to perform certain tasks. Equine assisted theapy in Croatia are not recognized as much as they really valid, because there are no standardized measurement instruments that can confirm the progress of children with disabilities in equine assisted therapy. Therefore, in Germany we can find German Research Center for Equine Assisted Therapy better known as GREAT, whose scientists throught many years of activity designed measuring instrument consisting of a list for evaluation of the progress of children with disabilities in equine assisted therapy DORI-K (Documentations und Beobachtungsbogen fur Reittherapeutische / Pedagogische Intervention) to confirm the therapeutic benefit that horses have on human beings. The main objective of this study was translation and adaptation of measuring instrument DORI-K (Documentations und Beobachtungsbogen fur Reittherapeutische / Pedagogische Intervention), standardized in Germany, in non-profit organization for equine assisted therapy in Croatia. Instrument is experimentally applied with two children with disabilities. One of them is a seven year old boy with sensory integration disabilities whose social and emotional development does not follow his age, and a boy with autism spectrum disorder, who has communication difficulties (a disorder in expressing and understanding speech) and express motor restlessness. Parts of DORI-K lists were applied with both survey participants, which means that measuring instrument DORI-K was successfully applied in a non-profit organization for equine assisted therapy in Croatia. It is necessary to carry out more research to prove applicability and importance of this type of therapy in Croatia, so programs would become better, more focused and more professional. Instruments for purpose of this work translated from German and applied for the first time in Croatia and described in this paper, will certainly contribute to that.
