Abstract
Središnju poziciju u proučavanju pismenosti slijepih i slabovidnih osoba zauzima Braillevo pismo kao temelj pisane komunikacije osoba oštećena vida, čije dobro poznavanje otvara vrata obrazovanju, zaposlenju i uspjehu.

Parallel abstract (English)
The concept of literacy has been expanded from simply the ability to read and write to the ability to communicate meaning through language at various levels of proficiency. The Braille writing system takes the central position in the study of literacy of visually impaired persons, it is the foundation of their written communication and it provides opportunities for education, employment and success. Due to these reasons, research data about a decrease in Braille literacy and active usage is very concerning. The aim of this study was to determine the percentage of visually impaired high school students in Croatia who actively use the Braille writing system and to examine to what purposes they use it. Also, students who do not use the Braille writing system will be asked about the reasons for not using it and alternative mediums of written communication. The study was conducted in May and June 2016 on a sample of 19 examinees in the Centre for Education and Rehabilitation ''Vinko Bek'' and in integration. The required data and information were collected using a self-constructed questionnaire designed specifically for this study. The results have shown that most of the students do use the Braille writing system, especially in educational activities. Moreover, results have shown that there is a statistically significant difference in the frequency of the usage of Braille writing system regarding gender, the person's age when the visual impairment was acquired and the level of remaining sight. Variables that affect these differences the most are found in the field of educational activities.
