Abstract

Hearing impairment means a partial or complete inability to listen and it is one of the most common sensory disorders. Hearing impairment at an early age affects development of communication and language and also socio-emotional and cognitive development of the children. For the negative impact of hearing impairment to be minimized, the key is early detection, identification and (re)habilitation. The child is involved in the early intervention program that includes a wide and varied range of activities and procedures that are intended to support early child development. It includes support, information, rehabilitation and counseling to children, their parents and other family members. Foreign literature shows plenty of research on the experiences of parents of children with disabilities and specifically impaired hearing about experiences with early intervention. In Croatia there are only a few researches about opinion of parents of children with disabilities about their experiences with the early intervention generally, and none with parents of the children with hearing impairment. The purpose of this work is to gain insight into the perception of parents of children with hearing impairment of the offered early intervention for the purposes of noting its satisfaction with the provided parental intervention and the components of early intervention that parents recognize as important to their sense of well-being and the progress of their child. For the purposes of research in the Department of hearing impairment Education and Rehabilitation of the University of Zagreb created a questionnaire designed to study the ways of implementing early intervention for children with hearing impairment in Croatia. It consisted of 36 particles, with closed and oped-ended questions and was conducted anonymously, for about 20 minutes The study included 20 families - 12 mothers and 8 fathers of children with hearing impairments involved in early intervention in Zagreb and Split do to damage to hearing that was deteced for their child within the first seven years of their life. With a few findings that indicate that there is a lot of space for improvement of early intervention for children with hearing impairment in Croatia, it should be noted that the total parental satisfaction with service delivery and support moderate, that the parents' opinion about the impact of the intervention on the achievements of their child in pre-school period is relatively high, that parents consider that the intervention contributes to positive emotions in their family and the well-being of the child, and also that the level of educatinal support for their children is high.
