Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability characterized by repetitive and characteristic patterns of behavior and difficulties with social communication. The symptoms are present from early childhood. The term “spectrum” refers to the wide range of symptoms, skills and levels of support that is required. There are other symptoms, besides the dominant ones, which also vary in severity and have an impact on socialization, communication, therapy and learning. In a child with autism spectrum disorder therapy it is necessary to use a technique that is not, at least exclusively, verbal. The use of creative media enables it. In addition, there are numerous of extra benefits. The aim of this graduation thesis was to examine the impact of creative media in the incidence and intensity of challenging behaviors in children with autism spectrum disorder, as well as encouraging the learning of new behaviors by implementing media in therapy. Visual arts and music were used as creative media implemented in therapy. The variables that were monitored and recorded during the sessions are as follows: agressive and self-injurying behaviour, inadequate use of objects, eye contact, joint attention and the difficulties of maintaining a sitting position due to the psychomotor restlessness. Results indicate efficacy of used art media in decreasing the frequency of challenging behavior and increasing the frequency of adequate behavior. This study indicates the need for aproacching every child as an individual in order to find a way which enables the easiest way to learn.
