Abstract

This study wanted to examine the symptoms representation of internalizing problem behaviors bettwen adolescents from MeĊimurje and explore the relationship between internalizing problems with risky and protective factors in school environment. In addition, it was also important to examine if there are gender and age differences in occuring symptoms bettwen adolescents from the examination group. This study included 207 male and female students of the first, second and third grade of „Gymnasy Josip Slavenski“ in Ĉakovec. The sample included 65 boys and 142 girls. Assessment of symptoms prevalence of the internalizing problems was conducted with partly CTC Questionnaire for Children and Youth and partly SDQ questionnaire, which high school students fulfilled in their schools with their own acceptance and approval. The results have shown that the subjects are expressing various symptoms from the problem domain, mainly the most depressive symptoms, followed by emotional problems and symptoms at the end of suicidality. Deducted gender differences indicate that teenage girls oftenly express symptoms of depression and emotional difficulties, while the differences between teenage boys and girls were not found in symptoms of suicidality. Deducted age differences point out that with age, emotional symptoms are decreasing. The results of this study have shown that risk factors are representated in a low rate, while the presence of protective factors were represented very good. Respondents estimate that at school there is enough opportunity, but less rewards for prosocial involvement of students, while the meaningfulness of the school curriculum is not really great. Furthermore, students, who are less attached to the school and school work has more meaning to them, more frequently express symptoms of internalizing problems. Also, it was shown that as students have lower grades, the suicide rate is higher.
