Abstract

Dance movement therapy (DMT) is defined as the using of movement and dance in the creative process with the aim of encouraging the emotional, cognitive, social and physical integration of an individual. Its using can be useful in the problem area of body image disorders or in conditions where certain physical, intellectual or sensory limitations inhibit the realization of emotional or social needs. Since DMT could improve functional abilities, gain new insights about one's emotional experience, needs, objectives and strategies, as well as encourage social interaction, this therapy can contribute to subjective, emotional, spiritual and psychosocial well-being, and indirectly improve the quality of life of an individual. There are different interpretations, definitions and descriptions of the concept of quality of life. It is a complex concept that includes physical health, psychological state of a person, degree of independence, social relationships, personal beliefs and a person’s relationship with the essential features of the environment. The quality of life of persons with intellectual disabilities is basically determined by identical or very similar indicators as in the typical population. Movement and dance therapy can affect several key indicators of the quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. First of all it refers to the indicator of being, because it contributes to physical well-being, which includes health, mobility and security. Next, it contributes to emotional and spiritual well-being, which combines the emotional and mental state, fulfilment, stress, self-esteem and self-confidence. Finally, there is social well-being, which includes interpersonal relations. In this sense, defined aim of this paper was related to a review of recent studies on the effect of on the quality of life of persons with intellectual disabilities. It also includes a presentation of some specific approaches in creating therapeutic programs, as well as a description of possible ways of evaluating the effect of DMT on motor skills, dynamic movements’ quality, emotional status, interpersonal communication and group cohesion. Although the results of scientific research and the practical application of DMT show positive effects in the area of psychomotor and social functioning of people with intellectual disabilities, there is a strong need to carry out further investigations focused on the development of therapeutic programs due to the different group of clients, and on the development of systematic evaluation that include specific set of instruments and assessments parameters appropriate to this population. This would facilitate a positive impact on the future prospects of using DMT as a standard therapeutic method for people with intellectual and other sensory or developmental disabilities.
